What is SUP and who is it for?
Stand Up Paddling — or SUP — is one of the most accessible water sports there is. You stand on a wide, stable board and use a long paddle to move through the water. SUP requires no previous experience, no wind and no waves, making it suitable for virtually everyone — from children and families to fitness enthusiasts and experienced water sports people. You can paddle on lakes, fjords, harbours and the sea, and the pace is entirely your own.
SUP is used for everything from relaxed touring and yoga on the water to fitness training and wave surfing. If you want to explore the coast, take the kids out on the water or simply enjoy the peace of paddling, SUP is a great choice.
What is the difference between an inflatable and a rigid SUP board?
There are two main types of SUP boards, and they each suit different needs:
Inflatable SUP boards are by far the most popular choice for recreational paddlers. They can be deflated and packed into a compact rucksack, making them easy to transport by car, bike or even plane. When inflated, modern inflatable boards are surprisingly stiff and stable — far more so than many people expect. They are also more robust against bumps and knocks than rigid boards. Our inflatable SUP boards are ideal for families, beginners and anyone who wants a board they can take anywhere.
Rigid SUP boards are made from fibreglass, carbon or epoxy and offer the best performance in terms of speed and glide. They are preferred by experienced paddlers who race, surf waves or cover long distances. The downside is that they require a roof rack or van to transport and more storage space at home.
Which SUP board is right for me?
The right board depends on your weight, your intended use and whether you'll be paddling alone or with children. Here are the most important factors:
- Width: A wider board (85–34 inches) is more stable and ideal for beginners, yoga and families. A narrower board is faster but less stable.
- Length: Longer boards (12–14 feet) are faster and better for touring. Shorter boards (9–11 feet) are more manoeuvrable and good for waves and general use.
- Volume: The board's volume (in litres) determines how much weight it can support. As a rule of thumb, your board should have at least 1–1.5 litres of volume per kilogram of body weight.
- Purpose: Are you planning relaxed touring, family outings, fitness training or wave surfing? Each use case has an optimal board type.

What size SUP board do I need?
Size is closely linked to your weight and intended use. As a general guide:
- Beginner or family use: Choose a board that is wider and longer than you think you need. Stability is more important than speed when you're starting out. A person weighing 80 kg will typically need a board with at least 250–300 litres of volume.
- Touring and fitness: A longer, narrower board gives better glide and speed. Volume of 200–250 litres is often sufficient for an 80 kg paddler.
- Children: Smaller, lighter boards with good stability are ideal. We also offer boards that fit both an adult and a child.

What accessories do I need for SUP?
A complete SUP setup consists of more than just the board. The most important accessories are:
- Paddle: The paddle should be adjustable and about 20–25 cm taller than you. Lighter paddles (carbon or fibreglass) reduce fatigue on longer tours.
- Leash: A leash attaches the board to your ankle so it doesn't drift away if you fall in. Essential for safety on open water.
- Pump: An inflatable board needs a pump. Most boards come with a manual pump included — a double-action pump or electric pump makes the job faster.
- Bag/rucksack: A carrying bag makes it easy to transport your board on public transport, by bike or on holiday.
- Fin: Most boards come with a removable fin that provides directional stability. Some boards have multiple fin options.
You'll find all SUP accessories in our SUP accessories range — paddles, leashes, pumps, bags and more.
Can I try SUP before buying?
Yes — we offer SUP courses and rental at Amager Beach. It's a great way to get a feel for different boards and find out what suits you before you invest. Our instructors can also give you advice on which board to buy based on your experience during the session.
