Whether you are into kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foiling, SUP, wave surfing, kayaking, winter bathing or other watersports, the right wetsuit is essential for comfort, warmth and freedom of movement. Water temperature, season and activity level all play an important role in choosing the right neoprene suit.

At Frozen Palm Tree, you will find a wide selection of men’s wetsuits from brands such as Mystic, ION and Prolimit — in thicknesses from 2 mm to 6 mm, with long or short arms and legs. What wetsuit size should I choose?

For a wetsuit to keep you warm and provide maximum comfort, it is essential that it fits closely without restricting your freedom of movement. A wetsuit should not gap around the neck, back or lower back, as too much cold water can otherwise enter the suit. At the same time, it should not be so tight that it restricts breathing or movement.

Sizing varies from brand to brand and from model to model. On each product page, you will find a size guide with body measurements and recommended sizes. If you are unsure, you are always welcome to contact us — we will help you find the right fit.

How thick should a men’s wetsuit for watersports be?

The thickness of the neoprene determines the cold conditions the suit can be used in. The thicker the neoprene, the better the insulation — but usually with slightly less flexibility. That is why the choice depends on both water temperature and activity.

For SUP, kayaking and winter bathing, you often move less or stay more still in the water, so a warmer suit can be an advantage. For kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foiling and wave surfing, you typically need a suit with good flexibility in the shoulders, arms and upper body, so you can move freely.

As a rule of thumb, a 3 mm wetsuit or shorty is often enough in summer, while a 4/3 mm, 5/4 mm or 6/5 mm suit is better suited for spring, autumn and winter. Your personal sensitivity to cold also plays a major role in the choice.

Which wetsuit should I use in summer?

In summer in Denmark, anything from a 3 mm steamer to a shorty can be the right choice, depending on water temperature, wind and how sensitive you are to cold. A steamer with long arms and legs provides extra warmth and protection from sun, wind, board contact and hard landings. This is especially relevant for kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foiling and wave surfing.

A shorty with short arms and legs is typically made from 2 mm neoprene and is ideal for warm summer days, SUP, beach use and relaxed sessions with maximum freedom of movement. A springsuit with long legs and short arms is a good compromise between warmth, comfort and flexibility.

Which wetsuit should I use in winter?

For winter use, we typically recommend a 5 mm or 6 mm wetsuit with warm lining and possibly an integrated hood. This is especially relevant if you want to kitesurf, windsurf, wing foil, paddle SUP or surf during the colder months.

Combine your winter wetsuit with neoprene boots, neoprene gloves and a hood to stay warm for longer. Hands, feet and head get cold quickly, and this is often what determines how long your session lasts. See our neoprene boots and neoprene gloves for complete winter gear.

When do I need a 5 mm wetsuit?

A 5 mm wetsuit is typically recommended for water temperatures of around 10–17 degrees Celsius — especially during spring and autumn in Denmark. It is a good choice for many types of watersports when you want more warmth than a classic summer suit, while still maintaining good freedom of movement.

With accessories such as a hood, thermal layer, gloves and boots, a 5 mm suit can also be used in milder winter conditions. For very cold winter days or longer sessions, however, a 6 mm winter wetsuit may be the better choice.

What is the difference between wetsuits for kitesurfing, SUP, windsurfing and surfing?

Many wetsuits can be used across several types of watersports, but the most important features vary depending on the activity.

For kitesurfing, windsurfing and wing foiling, flexibility in the shoulders, arms and upper body is important because you actively work with a bar, boom or wing. For wave surfing, freedom of movement is also important, especially when paddling. For SUP, kayaking and winter bathing, warmth and comfort can be more important than maximum performance, as you often move less intensively.

That is why you should choose a wetsuit based on both temperature and activity — not just thickness.

What is the advantage of front zip compared to back zip?

A front zip or chest zip wetsuit typically gives you better flexibility and freedom of movement than a back zip, because the zipper is placed on the chest instead of down the back. In addition, a front zip suit often retains heat better, as less water usually enters the suit.

Front zip is slightly harder to get into than back zip. If you want maximum warmth, flexibility and performance for active watersports, front zip is often the best choice.

Are there wetsuits without a zipper?

Yes — so-called zipless or zipfree wetsuits do not have a traditional zipper and fit very closely to the body. They provide maximum flexibility and freedom of movement, which is especially beneficial for surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and wing foiling.

They can be slightly harder to get in and out of than wetsuits with a zipper. If you prioritise performance and flexibility, a zipfree wetsuit can be a very good choice.
